In the summer of 1816 — the "Year Without a Summer" — eighteen-year-old Mary Shelley joined Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley on the shores of Lake Geneva. A ghost-story competition gave birth to her waking nightmare of a "pale student of unhallowed arts" stooping over the thing he had assembled.
